سُورَةُ النساء .4 4. Surat An-Nisâ' : The Women فَإِذَا قَضَيۡتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱذۡكُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمٗا وَقُعُودٗا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمۡۚ فَإِذَا ٱطۡمَأۡنَنتُمۡ فَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۚ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتۡ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ كِتَٰبٗا مَّوۡقُوتٗا Then when you have finished the prayer, remember Allah standing and sitting and reclining; but when you are secure (from danger) keep up prayer; surely prayer is a timed ordinance for the believers.#103

Salat times are specifically designated times to perform the daily five Salats. Theses times are dependent on the location of Earth relative to the Sun at a specific locality, hence; these times are different from one location on Earth to another and from season to another.

Important to note, in Islam, the night precedes the day, and a new day begins and ends at sunset, therefore; the first Salat of a day is Maghrib, and Asr is the last Salat of a day. That's the reason behind beginning Salat Altraweeh on the eve of Ramadan and its absence on the last day of Ramadan.

Salat times before advancement of Mathematics and electronics.

How did Moslems determine Salat times before the advancement of Math and more recently the use of electronics? There are numerous Hadith narrations according to The Prophet (P. B. U. H.) on how and when to perform Salat; from the different narrations we can tell exactly how Moslems determined Salat times in the past.

  • Maghrib

Begins at sunset, when the sun drops below the horizon and can't be seen directly. (End of fast.)

  • Isha

Begins at dusk, or end of twilight (the end of the sun illumination of the atmosphere while it is not directly visible), or when the stars begin to appear.

  • Fajr

Begins at dawn or beginning of twilight before sunrise, or when the stars disappear completely, and ends at sunrise. (Beginning of fast)

  • Duha

Begins after complete sunrise and ends either at Zhuhr, or half way to Zhuhr.

  • Zhuhr

Begins after the sun has passed its zenith, which is after an object begins to form a shadow (length of a strap of sandal), and ends with Asr.

  • Asr

Begins when the shadow of an object equals twice its length (Hanfi Juristic), or length of object equals its length (Maliki, Hanbali, and Shafii Juristic), and ends at Maghrib.

  • Forbidden Times

There are three forbidden times for Salat, when the sun begins to set till it completely sets (Maghrib), when the sun begins to rise till it is fully up (End of Fajr), and when the sun is at its zenith (its highest point, and object doesn't form a show at all)

Salat time Calculations.

As it is clear from the above listed time of Salats, that each one is a time based on a location on Earth relative to the Sun, which is a particular point of time in the daily motion of Earth rotating on its axis, as well as rotating around the sun at the same time. We have been blessed with some knowledge about our universe and reassured by the following Ayatt (only as example); Alhamdu Allah, Salat times can be calculated.

سُورَةُ الرحمن .55 55. Surat Ar-Rahmân : The Beneficent ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٖ The sun and the moon are made punctual, follow courses (exactly) computed.#5

سُورَةُ الفرقان .25 25. Surat Al-Furqân : The Criterion أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَيۡفَ مَدَّ ٱلظِّلَّ وَلَوۡ شَآءَ لَجَعَلَهُۥ سَاكِنٗا ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَا ٱلشَّمۡسَ عَلَيۡهِ دَلِيلٗا Do you not see how your Lord stretches the shadow? Had it been His will, He could have made it constant. Then He appointed the sun to be a guide to it (or an indication of it); .#45

سُورَةُ يس .36 36. Surat YâSîn : Yaseen لَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ يَنۢبَغِي لَهَآ أَن تُدۡرِكَ ٱلۡقَمَرَ وَلَا ٱلَّيۡلُ سَابِقُ ٱلنَّهَارِۚ وَكُلّٞ فِي فَلَكٖ يَسۡبَحُونَ It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law). #40

سُورَةُ يونس .10 10. Surat Yûnus : Jonas هُوَ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ ضِيَآءٗ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ نُورٗا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعۡلَمُواْ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلۡحِسَابَۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ لِقَوۡمٖ يَعۡلَمُونَ It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that you might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand. #5

Important things to note

The following are very important when tabulating Salat times.

  1. Location (see about your privacy)

To make sure you are getting as accurate as possible Salat times, use a GPS to determine your exact location, a GPS can also provide your altitude; it can make a difference if you are in an area that is significantly above sea level. Do not relay on the tool we use to retrieve your longitude and latitude, it is not very accurate.

  2. Mazhab

It makes a difference for Slat Al-Asr.

  3. Calculation Methods

Select a calculation method that you are most comfortable or familiar with, if not sure; the method names hint a geographic location or a Juristic so you can follow your surrounding community. It doesn't really make a difference, they are all equally correct as they are based on justifiable reasonings.

  4. Methods for higher latitude

Some locations on Earth have a very long Twilight during certain period of a year, which presents a challenge in determining Salat times, scholars have proposed three methods to perform the calculations (Middle of night, 1/7th of night, and Angle Based), consult with your local or nearest Mosque on which to pick.
